9th PGS highlighted the transformation of a good governance warrior

Davao City- “For too long we have been discussing and pining for development, but we’ve done so as if there were a magic bullet to make a lucky shot at it.” Dr. Jesus Estanislao, the Chairman of the Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA) said to a group of 120 national and local government officials at the 9th Public Governance System (PGS) Boot Camp.

Dr. Estanislao was one of the speakers of the PGS  Boot Camp, an intensive training program conducted by the Institute for Solidarity in Asia (ISA) twice a year for their Partners on the governance pathway.

The most recent PGS Boot Camp was held at the Seda Abreeza Hotel in Davao City, from the 30th of January to the 4th of February of 2014. It had run from January 30 to February 1 for the Basic Class and February 3 to February 4 for the Master Class.

The PGS Boot Camp ran under the theme of “Governance Warriors.” Delegates who had attended had gone not representing their respective agencies only but as warriors – answering the call for positive change through transformation.

The PGS Training, aside from the usual theoretical approach, had accomplished some best practice sharing between the governance warriors from different sectors. While these best practice sharing sessions went on naturally between the governance warriors, ISA also invited resource speakers and some ISA veteran Partners on the Pathway for them to add to the discussion of the participants.

The PGS Boot Camp provided a newly enhanced format for the training with modules that had addressed some of the many challenges faced by the Partner Agencies of ISA. These modules involved discussions on governance values and how these values may be incorporated into one agency’s or personnel’s strategy.

By the 4th of February, the new “governance warriors” left Davao City with newly acquired knowledge on governance values and systems and a willingness to spark and keep ablaze the fire of good governance. The warriors left with the capacity to actually do something transformative for the betterment of the Filipino people.

“We are for good governance because of what it delivers – transformation.” Dr. Estanislao said at the closing plenary of the Boot Camp. “With some 100 governance warriors having joined the Boot Camp, it is clear that transformation through concrete actions, however small, will start occurring. No matter how long it takes, transformation will happen – one agency, one unit, one sector – at a time,” he concluded. #

The ISA organizes the PGS Boot Camp twice a year, in January and July, to support PGS Partners that are on the Governance Pathway. The PGS Boot Camp is a developmental conference focused on building the capacity of PGS practitioners, and developing the values and skills to raise the standards of governance and performance in their organization.

The PGS Boot Camp features two classes: the Basic Class and the Master Class. The Basic Class is a pre-requisite to the Master Class. The Basic Class tackles cultural transformation and change management, communicating strategy, strategy design and execution, managing initiatives for results, and monitoring and reporting strategic performance. On the other hand, the Master Class features modules on institutionalizing governance, personal governance and achieving a work-life balance, risk management and performance analysis.
