As part of their efforts to pursue good governance, the Philippine National Police (PNP) has signed onto the Integrity Initiative, which focuses on anti-corruption. The top leadership of the PNP, including its multi-sector governance council representatives and other external stakeholders, officially signed the Initiative at the 24th Founding Anniversary ceremonies at Camp Crame on January 26, 2015.
Unfortunately, the Founding Anniversary also coincided with “SAF 44”, the most recent tragedy to hit the PNP. The day before the ceremony took place, 44 police officers were killed in a special operation that was meant to apprehend an international terrorist in Mindanao. The ceremony therefore paid tribute to the fallen officers who gave their lives in service of the country. The Secretary of the Interior and Local Government, Hon. Manuel Roxas II, reminded those present to “honor their sacrifice by what we do every day.”
He commended the men and women of the PNP for their efforts to carry out their duties to the best of their abilities, and cited a notable and steady decrease in crime rates over the past three months, saying that the PNP should be proud of their progress. The ceremony also recognized several officers who had performed outstandingly during the recent Papal Visit of Pope Francis. The PNP received positive feedback from Filipino citizens for their service during the Pope’s week-long visit, has continued to make improvements in the delivery of its services, and hopes to positively impact public perception to support their good governance efforts.
