In line with their vision to be Northern Luzon’s center for health and wellness by 2020, the City of San Fernando La Union has developed an initiative to meet the occupational wellness of barangay residents. This income-generating project or “IGP sa Barangay” initiative is now being carried out in cooperation with private sector partners to provide employment opportunities and decrease poverty at the barangay level.
San Fernando’s IGP initiative focuses on enabling barangays to develop local products and services that maximize natural, human, and other resources that are unique to their communities. Barangay products now include free-range chicken, bamboo handicrafts, and various delicacies.
12 model barangays were selected as part of the pilot group and given initial capital by the city government.
Since its pilot launch in September 2014, 6 out of the 12 model barangays have already been able to generate a positive net income, and the City is continuing program development by providing training and marketing efforts to assist the barangays.
San Fernando La Union is currently pursuing the Institutionalization Stage of the Performance Governance System.
