Last December 2, 2015, the National Electrification Administration (NEA) celebrated its electrification of its 30 thousandth sitio, Sitio Malipayon in Sugay City, and its 11 millionth consumer, a Luisa Laguyo from Sitio Nompolia, Hangunduan, Ifugao. This was accomplished with the help of NEA’s partner-electric cooperatives – namely Northern Negros Electric Cooperative (Noneco) for the former, and Ifugao Electric Cooperative, Inc. (Ifelco) for the latter.
This is all part of the Sitio Electrification Program (SEP) of NEA in partnership with partner-electric cooperatives nation-wide. The program is the government’s way of reaching out to far flung areas which have endured the lack of electricity in their communities.
According to NEA Administrator Edita S. Bueno, the milestones achieved by the SEP reflect the strengthened public-private partnership between the agency and the electric cooperatives (ECs).
Electrification does not merely end with the provision of electricity or light, but translates to the improvement of the citizens’ well-being, access to social services and livelihood opportunities. It then translates to actively contributing to nation-building. It is all for the bigger goal of making nation-building a shared responsibility.
